Half-Life 2 managed to break a new record 20 years after its release
The 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2, one of the most influential shooters in the history of video games, comes with the breaking of a new record for the game.
November 16, 2024, marked the 20th anniversary of the launch of Half-Life 2, the sequel to a game that completely changed the way we understand narrative in video games and the concept that many cases had of first-person shooters. A continuation that brought with it huge upgrades in every sense, with an even more immersive story and a physics system that continues to impact today. A game that two decades later has achieved its largest concurrent user numbers on the platform, an achievement that demonstrates the timelessness of Valve’s legendary title.
And just as well, right on the day of its anniversary, Half-Life 2 achieved a peak of 64,085 users, completely surpassing the previous record of 16,000 users in 2021 during a community event. The numbers collected by SteamDB have existed since 2008, so it took four years from its launch until it was possible to have a record of active players in the game. Now, with Valve temporarily giving away the title and with a documentary that talks about what the game meant, the fever for Half-Life 2 returns, proving that it never goes out of style and remains as fresh as the first day. An unforgettable adventure that we want to continue dreaming about.
Two decades of a video game legend
The year was 2004, November 16 to be exact, when Half-Life 2 would begin to change forever the way of understanding the video game industry. The reason? The need to have an internet connection to be able to install the game is a fact that we see as completely normal today, but two decades ago, it was a huge debate and caused anger among many users. Steam wanted to make his way in a big way and Half-Life 2 was one of his big bets to continue forming the user base of what is today the most popular video game platform on the planet.
