Harrenhal, the cursed castle in ‘House of the Dragon’ where Daemon is,
The third episode of ‘House of the Dragon’ season 2 brings watchers back to the biggest (and most dreadful) castle in Westeros.
‘House of the Dragon’ has re-entered one of the most mysterious locations in the geography of Westeros. We’re talking about Harrenhal, the enormous fortress that many say is cursed. But why has the legend of this place grown so much? Throughout the history of the continent, we have witnessed how death has loomed over the Houses that have tried to take it over. The second season of the series focuses on the mysteries that surround it.
The legend behind Harrenhal, the largest castle in Westeros and key to ‘House of the Dragon’
The name of the fortress makes direct reference to Harren Hoare, better known as Harren the Black, the last King of the conglomerate that once formed the Riverlands and the Iron Islands. The monarch wanted to build the largest castle seen on this side of the world with a key material: blackstone. It was said at that time that this mineral would be impenetrable to the fire of dragons, which gave it that gloomy appearance that has characterized it since its construction.
When Aegon the Conqueror landed in Westeros, his objective was to take over the lands of Harren. His reign was almost dictatorial, which caused other Houses around him to join the foreigners to overthrow him. After many battles fought, Harren and his remaining troops retreated to Harrenhal to turn it into the last bastion of defense. Logical, considering that it is said that it can hold 40,000 men.
Aegon came to their door with a peace proposal, something difficult to see in his career, but Harren and his family declined his proposal, arguing that the black stone would be an obstacle for their dragons. However, Harren’s arrogance led him and his family to sign a death sentence. The dragons can fly, and from the sky, they launched their flames against all the flammable materials inside the castle. Everyone inside died instantly.
It was the beginning of the legend after the curse of Harrenhal. The subsequent regents of the castle died under strange circumstances. More than five Houses passed through its reign, but most fell before their time. In both ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ we have seen many of their characters perish within their walls. Curse or not, it’s clear that something is up. In episode 3 of the second season of the spin-off, it is revealed that Daemon’s hallucinations are the result of a mysterious figure. In the next episode we will know more.
