Harry Potter film director is blunt about a possible reunion: “It’s never going to happen”

A magical reunion that may never be.

Update:

Although a Harry Potter television series is already in production, an entire generation would love to see Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson back on screen in a new installment. However, according to director Chris Columbus, this is far from happening, and it will take more than magic to make it happen.

In a recent interview with The Times, the director behind the first two films in the franchise, ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets‚’ spoke about the possibility of seeing the actors again, despite having shown interest in reuniting them for a possible big-screen version of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,’ which, in theory, would serve as an eighth book in the series.

“It’s never going to happen,” he says. “It’s gotten so complicated with all the political stuff. Everyone in the cast has their own opinion, which is different from her opinion, which makes it impossible.” He adds: “I haven’t spoken to Miss Rowling in a decade or so, so I have no idea what’s going on with her, but I keep very close contact with Daniel Radcliffe and I just spoke to him a few days ago. I still have a great relationship with all the kids in the cast.”

Pictures announced August 21, 2000 that the young actor Daniel Radcliffe, center, has been named as the young actor who will play Harry Potter, in the upcoming film adaptation of the popular books by J.K. Rowling. Newcomers Rupert Grint, right, and Emma Watson will be taking on the roles of Ron and Hermione, Harry's best friends at Hogwarts. (Courtesy of Warner Bros./Newsmakers)Getty Images

J.K. Rowling and her controversial views on the transgender community

The “political stuff” Columbus refers to is J.K. Rowling’s controversial public discourse and stance on the transgender community. Over the last few years, the author has been a vocal critic of transgender rights and has reportedly used some of her earnings from the Harry Potter franchise to fund anti-trans organizations. This has caused Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson, among others from the original cast, to distance themselves from the author.

The last time the original cast of Harry Potter was together was during the 2022 documentary, ‘Return to Hogwarts.’
