In 2020, Miyazaki himself took center stage in the documentary ’10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki’, which showcased the meticulous creative process behind his studio’s works. In it, he shared one of the most memorable quotes of his career.
“You have to be determined to change the world with your films. Even though nothing changes,” the director said. For him, following this motto is what truly “means to be a film maker.” Miyazaki has always imbued his work with a sense of purpose. For him, there is nothing purer than the interaction between the brush and his hand: the two form a perfect partnership through which his inner world begins to express itself outwardly.

The filmmaker has always had a grumpy side that his fans know all too well. His famous quotes on this subject make it clear that Miyazaki belongs to another era. “I’m a man of the 20th century.
