HBO’s Harry Potter series aims to break free from Harry’s point of view
HBO’s adaptation expands the world beyond Harry, starting with the Malfoy family.

The anticipated Harry Potter television series from HBO is preparing to offer fans a perspective they never got from the original books or films. While the source material largely followed Harry’s point of view, the new show aims to broaden the narrative horizon by exploring the lives of supporting characters in much greater detail. Most notably, the series will dive into the home life of Harry’s rival, Draco Malfoy, providing a more intimate look at the dynamics within Malfoy Manor.
Lox Pratt, the young actor cast as Draco Malfoy, shared insights into this expanded approach in a recent interview with 1883 Magazine. “I think with this adaptation, you get to see so much more than the books,” said Pratt. “[The books] are very much over Harry’s shoulder, which is great, and that’s how they played the film as well. And I think Francesca [Gardiner] and Mark [Mylod] have been audible about this in their interviews, there’s just so much more that you get to see.”
Familiar faces and new perspectives
This expanded focus isn’t limited to the Malfoys. The series is set to include moments described but never shown in the original books, such as deeper looks into the lives of Hogwarts teachers and historical figures like Nicolas Flamel. Fans have already caught glimpses of John Lithgow’s Albus Dumbledore on set, alongside actors portraying Flamel and his wife.

In a move that will likely impact the early narrative, Johnny Flynn is set to join the cast as Lucius Malfoy in the first season—an earlier introduction than his debut in the second book, The Chamber of Secrets.
