HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series gets ‘Succession’ creative duo as writer and director
One of HBO’s most renowned creative duos have officially joined the upcoming Harry Potter series that’ll re-adapt the magical novels in a new format.
The Harry Potter series on HBO has finally got two key players that’ll push the production forward to release, as they have just revealed (via Deadline) the creative duo that has officially signed on to the project to write and direct the show based on J.K. Rowling’s magical world.
Known for their work on Succession, Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod will act as writer and director for this new show, respectively. Both will also come into the Harry Potter show as executive producers, apart from fulfilling their main roles adapting the series and directing several of the episodes. However, Gardiner will also serve as showrunner for the entire production, giving it a creative lead and helping to bring everything together.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is set to make a return
We’ve known for a couple of years already that a TV adaptation of the Harry Potter novels was in the works by HBO, but it’s only been recently that we’ve learned more details. Back in February, during an earnings call for Warner Bros. Discovery, we learned that they plan to premiere the show in 2026. “We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter. The last film was made more than a dozen years ago,” said CEO David Zaslav about the project.
The Harry Potter TV series has been in development since 2021 and until relatively recently, in April last year, the official announcement was made that the 7 books of the Boy Who Lived saga had been greenlit for television. Warner Bros. plans the series to run for 10 years and be a MAX exclusive. For the time being, there are no announcements about the possible cast or when filming will begin.+
But for every return of Harry Potter, other parts of the Wizarding World are on hold. The Fantastic Beasts franchise, a prequel to the Harry Potter adventures, is “parked” according to director David Yates. Although a total of 5 films were expected, this franchise is, in the words of its director, " sort of stop and pause.” So far neither Warner Bros. Discovery nor J.K. Rowling have commented on the matter.
