Helldivers 2 will “never” add competitive multiplayer to “reduce toxic elements” in the player base
The CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios has discarded the idea of PvP in Helldivers 2 in favor of building a supportive community for the game.
Surely not even in Arrowhead Game Studios could have imagined the great reception that Helldivers 2 has had, boosted of course by its simultaneous release on PlayStation 5 and PC. This has made the community already huge in its first days on the market, with multiple questions surrounding the future of the game. One of them is the future implementation of PVP game modes, something that the studio has categorically ruled out.
Will Helldivers 2 be competitive?
The answer could not be more emphatic: No. “We’ll “never” add a PvP mode”, said Johan Pilestedt, creative director of the game and CEO of Arrowhead, through X/, asked by several fans. “This is to reduce toxic elements from the community. We want an environment that’s supportive, fun and where we all are fighting on the same side!”
However, the answer doesn’t seem to have pleased everyone, and another user is not satisfied with the fact that a developer “is scared of adding PVP to his game.” Pilestedt’s response didn’t take long. “Not scared. Just we don’t want the toxicity that naturally comes with it. There are plenty, actually most, games that provide PvP .We make games for people that just want to have a challenging time with friends but in a PvE setting.”
“We will do our best to build Helldivers 2 into a long lasting and successful game and a beloved IP.” continued Pilestedt. “But it hasn’t happened over night. This is just the beginning.”
Meanwhile, part of the community also hopes to discover Arrowhead’s roadmap in the coming months, since like every game as a service, it is expected that content will continue to arrive with even more features soon. And taking into account the pace of play that players are currently playing, they will demand this sooner rather than later.
Helldivers 2 is now available on PlayStation 5 and PC.
