‘Helldivers’ movie loses its lead as Jason Momoa departs the project

The Arrowhead Game Studios adaptation remains in active development.

Update:

The announcement of the Helldivers’ movie came out of nowhere late last year, as if it were the soldiers themselves fighting for democracy in space. In February of this year, it was revealed that Jason Momoa would join the PlayStation Productions project as the lead actor, but after four months without any updates, it has now been revealed that the actor is no longer part of the production.

According to a report by Deadline, the actor has left the adaptation of the Arrowhead Game Studios title. Despite his departure, the project is still considered to be moving forward, with Sony now searching for a new lead actor.

What do we know so far about the Helldivers movie?

Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) is currently set to direct the film. Lin, in addition to directing, will be in charge of production through his company, Perfect Storm Entertainment. The project will also feature Gary Dauberman, the writer behind It and Annabelle, as the screenwriter for this installment. Alongside Lin, Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions will be involved in the production.

According to insiders, Lin sold himself as a non-gamer, allowing his pitch for directing to focus more on the humanity of the characters and the themes within the story, as well as the mythos that the game and its community have created. This approach suggests the film will balance the visceral action of fighting genetically engineered monsters with the character-driven drama that made Lin’s previous work resonate with global audiences. The premise, which inevitably draws comparisons to Starship Troopers, offers a fertile ground for Lin to explore the absurdity of war through a blockbuster lens.

The ‘Helldivers’ movie is due to release on November 10, 2027.
