Hideo Kojima presents the new teaser trailer for OD, and it’s pure terror: you’ll be afraid of doors

The director shares his fear of a specific sound: the knocking of a door.

Update:

The sound of someone knocking on the door. Knock, knock, knock. Who is waiting behind it, in the darkness of the doorway? Hideo Kojima is afraid of that sound, so he has transformed it into a concept and included it in the new trailer for OD, his highly anticipated horror video game in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios.

The video shows a woman lighting candles. Next, the character played by Sophia Lillis trembles with fear as the creaking of the door announces the arrival of someone unknown. Then, a muffled scream and darkness: “For all players and screamers,” it reads.

OD uses Unreal Engine 5

“At Xbox, we empower creators to push boundaries, and that’s exactly the game that OD is,” said Phil Spencer in his speech at the Kojima Productions 10th Anniversary event. The game uses the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine, a change from Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which run on Guerrilla’s Decima Engine technology.

“It’s very scary,” said Kojima. “I do have to say, the motion capture is astounding, if nothing else,” he emphasized. “I am afraid of the ‘knock’ sound, so I wanted to make that very frightening.” Kojima recalled that Jordan Peele, one of the masters of contemporary horror cinema, is working on another part of the OD experience, although it is unclear exactly what that is.

OD survived the wave of cancellations at Xbox Game Studios and continues production as normal. It still has no confirmed release date, although it was announced in 2022.
