Hideo Kojima rewrote the entire Death Stranding 2 after the pandemic

Hideo Kojima assured that when Death Stranding 2 took the stage at The Game Awards 2022, appearing in public for the first time, the script had already been completely rewritten. With many months since then without any news about the highly awaited sequel to his peculiar game, the creative confessed the reason that led him to such a drastic decision, and it is the coronavirus pandemic.

“I had the story written before the pandemic, but after experiencing it I wrote it completely from scratch”, he said. “I didn’t want to predict any more futures either, so I rewrote it.”

“Before the pandemic, I already had the entire narrative for Death Stranding 2 created,” Kojima continues to explain. In said interview, he hinted at whether the script for this sequel was created with the pandemic in mind. “Not quite. However, the pandemic had an influence, it led us to restructure the entire script. In Death Stranding we were about the act of connection, but when the pandemic hit, digital connections, like remote work, gained prominence. I also realized that digital connections could not meet human needs. We are inherently explorers.”
