House of the Dragon: The Black Council Knows the Challenges of Season Two

Eve Best and Steve Toussaint share details on the couple’s relationship as Rhaenys Targaryen and Corlys Velaryon head into Season 2 of House of the Dragon.

The family war for the Iron Throne is about to begin. The sides of the Targaryen family are defined for now, and one powerful couple is about to lose the calm and serenity that characterized them during House of the Dragon Season 1.

With the same grace with which they play their characters, Rhaenys Targaryen and Corlys Velaryon, we had the opportunity to speak with Eve Best and Steve Toussaint, who were there to represent the Black Council.

War will be a challenging time

If the first season made one thing clear, it was that Rhaenys and Corlys were the most focused of the family, with “The Queen Who Never Was” witnessing the coronation of Aegon II but knowing that it was not their conflict. However, the civil war is about to begin, and it will bring great challenges to the couple of House Velaryon.

“Without giving too much away… I think that both really are trying to hold things together,” Eve Best mentioned. “Let’s face it, they are the only grown-ups left with this group of spoiled brats. What’s always been the case so far is that we’ve had the rest of the world doing their nonsense.”

“We have been bonded, you know, like a rock. I’ve been able to feel that this one is my rock.,” Best said, referring to Toussaint. “But this rock is going to be in danger. I think the pressure is starting to invade and things have come up between us that we’re gonna have to deal with. It is going to be challenging, it’s going to test us in a way that we have never been tested before.”

For his part, Toussaint recognizes the love between Rhaenys and Corlys, knowing that the danger they are both in is testing the couple.

“Throughout season 1, the only time that Corlys is relaxed and himself are the scenes with his wife and it’s just the two of them. That’s when you see who he really is,” Toussaint commented. “Other than that he puts on this thing with that side. Of course, he loves her and she is essential to him and the fact that she becomes under threat in season 2 will possibly throw him off a bit.”

House of the Dragon Season 2 will premiere on Max on June 16, 2024, and will consist of 8 episodes. To read our interview with the Green Council, click here.
