House of the Dragon: The Green Council Preps Us for Season Two
Tom Glynn-Carney and Ewan Mitchell preview details of the siblings’ relationship as Aergon and Aemond Targaryen ahead of House of the Dragon season two.
The second season of House of the Dragon is so close that we can hear the dragons flapping in the sky. The drums take us forward to the great civil war that divided the Targaryen family, and a few weeks before the premiere, we had the opportunity to speak with some of the cast to get some previews of what to expect in the season, as well as details about the first season.
On this occasion, we present our interview with Tom Glynn-Carney and Ewan Mitchell, Aegon II Targaryen and Aemond Targaryen respectively, who were there to represent the Green Council.
A Brotherly Alliance
Aegon’s coronation as the new king of the dynasty was a swift and desperate move by Queen Alicent Hightower. And though it broke the terms of King Viserys I, it created tension between the brothers. While Aegon did not want the responsibility, Aemond felt he deserved the title.
“Aemond felt like Aegon lacked the perseverance and the strength to be king. While Aemond was training with Ser Criston Cole in the Red Keep yard, Aegon was probably drinking in the brothel somewhere,” Mitchell commented. “And so, he felt like Aegon squandered his inheritance. Although Aemond is the second son, he feels that he should have been the first, he should have been treated as the favorite and he never was. Going into season 2 you are going to see a development of that relationship and you should get excited.”
The Power of a Dangerous King
For his part, and despite his reluctance, Aegon is the one who finally becomes king, but as expected, power eventually does something to people, and the power of the Iron Throne has something to do with its new occupant.
“Oh God, how those crazy things do to a human being, doesn’t it? All that power. I think we are going to see Aegon take on his stride and realize, ‘Oh, hang on, this might not be as bad as I thought,’’” Tom Glynn-Carney commented. “Everyone shouting his name, see King’s Landing come alive, screaming, shouting, cheering… all that sort of thing. It is definitely a turning point for Aegon there. I think how we see him progress in season 2 is maybe he allows that newfound fame and fortune from the Iron Throne to go to his head a little bit and gets a bit carried away with the power that he now has. He’s a dangerous person anyway but put a crown on him and he’s even more dangerous.”
The monster within Aemond Targaryen
Since Aemond lost his eye and grew up, his appearance has become even more terrifying. His eye patch and his posture have a whole sense that is part of the character that Ewan Mitchell managed to build from some horror icons.
“There are some horror icons that I took inspiration from. Shakespeare said that eyes are the windows to the soul,” Mitchel said while covering his left eye with his hand. “And so what is that? What does that mean to only have one of them? How do you compensate? Is it through your physicality? And so I found inspiration in Michael Myers, in Freddy Krueger, in you know, the Creeper from Jeepers Creepers, you seen that? You know, no matter how slow they walk, they always catch up with Jamie Lee Curtis. This kind of scary inevitability that Aermon has he can’t get away from him. You know, if you go to engage with them, it’s not gonna look good for you.”
House of the Dragon Season 2 will premiere on Max on June 16, 2024, and will include 8 episodes.
