‘House of the Dragon’: what happened with Sunfyre and why could it change the entire series

King Aegon II Targaryen joined the Battle at Rook’s Rest, and the fate of the Seven Kingdoms may be forever changed.

Aegon II Targaryen ascends to the Iron Throne after a political maneuver that deprives Rhaenyra Targaryen, the rightful heir, of being anointed queen. The consequences for the Seven Kingdoms are dire, as the Dance of Dragons leaves a trail of blood, ash and destruction, burned corpses and death. ‘House of the Dragon’ has entered fully into this internal war, which pits beasts against beasts, family against family. Tired of being sidelined by his advisors, King Aegon takes matters into his own hands and mounts his dragon Sunfyre to fight in battle. What happens next can change the future of the original story in a drastic way.

This piece contains plot spoilers from episode 5 of the second season and the novel ‘Fire and Blood

Has Sunfyre died?

To win the Battle of Rook’s Rest, the Greens hide Vhagar, the most powerful and monstrous dragon. Princess Rhaenys rides Meleys into battle and burns her enemies, but the situation changes when Sunfyre appears in the sky. Both dragons engage in a brutal fight, which is interrupted when Vhagar appears. Aemond, brother of the king, attacks Aegon and Sunfyre collapses in the flames. Badly wounded, the monarch is taken to King’s Landing, where he is treated for his serious injuries. Meanwhile, Aemond is appointed regent. The question is, what has happened to Sunfyre?

In the fifth episode of ‘House of the Dragon’ season 2, there is some confusion because it plays with ambiguity. It is said that Sunfyre did not manage to survive, which suggests a change that could modify the development of the war. It has already been said that there are two canons: that of the books and that of the series of the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe, which opens the doors to big changes. The truth is that in ‘Fire and Blood’ both Aegon and Sunfyre survive. In fact, at the end of the Dance of Dragons Rhaenyra flees King’s Landing and is taken prisoner by the usurper. The monarch orders Sunfyre to kill her and the badly injured dragon, suffering the consequences of what happened at Rook’s Rest, devours Rhaenyra in six bites. Only part of her left leg remains.

If Sunfyre has really died in ‘House of the Dragon’ inevitably, the outcome of Rhaenyra Targaryen will also be different. In any case, we still have the series for a while: the second season has not concluded yet and the third is already confirmed officially.
