How many episodes will ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 have, and how many seasons are left?

The first ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off is returning on June 17 to Max, but there’s still more to come

There was a time when thousands of dragons roamed the skies, but the glory days of ancient Valirya will never return. Members of Houses Targaryen and Velaryon are still dragon riders, although the number of specimens is no longer what it was. ‘House of the Dragon’, the first spin-off of ‘Game of Thrones’, is set more than one hundred years later that Aegon The Conqueror proclaimed himself king of the Seven Kingdoms. The conflict of this prequel is a consequence of the ambition for power, which leads to the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war. How many seasons will the series have to close this plot?

Everything we know about the future seasons of ‘House of the Dragon’

House of the Dragon’ has been conceived as a series of several seasons. The first of them, which premiered in 2022, builds the entire context that leads to the irremediable armed conflict. Named princess of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne, Rhaenyra Targaryen must face a problem that has nothing to do with her abilities to reign: having been born a woman. King Viserys has sons with his second wife, Alicent Hightower, causing friction among the aristocracy and machinations for the monarch to change his mind and name one of his sons.

The second season focuses on the Dance of the Dragons, but it will not cover the entire conflict, so the series will continue beyond these episodes. HBO has just officially confirmed its renewal and the creatives are already working on it. At the moment, the situation is as follows.

  • First season: 10 episodes
  • Second season: 8 episodes
  • Third season: number of episodes to be determined.

Neither the showrunners nor HBO have revealed exactly the number of seasons that ‘House of the Dragon’ will have. Despite this, George R.R. Martin – author of the novels and part of the creative team of the series – has shared that in his opinion it should be four seasons of 10 episodes. These statements came before it was known that season 2 was going to reduce the number of episodes, what has happened? In recent statements to EW, screenwriter and producer Sarah Hess has acknowledged that the decision was not made by the creative team, although she has not explained the specific reasons.

The second season of ‘House of the Dragon’ will premiere its first episode next June 17 at Max.
