Disney is aware that ‘Star Wars’ is much more than what viewers see on tv and on the big screen. The brand is a pop culture giant that has already gone through several generational changes. And yet, its strength remains practically the same as in the golden age of the original trilogy, despite what one would think. According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, the real gold mine for the company is found in its merchandising.

THR revealed that Disney earns around $1 billion each fiscal year simply by selling stuffed dolls, mugs, figures, and various products related to ‘Star Wars’. It is one of the economic cores of the franchise, and perhaps that is why debacles like ‘The Acolyte’ are less painful for the company’s portfolio.

The truth is that Lucasfilm knows very well how to create icons that transcend beyond the screen. We don’t have to go far: ‘The Mandalorian’ captured a Baby Yoda which quickly became the unbreakable hallmark of the license in recent years. The same thing happened in the last Skywalker trilogy with BB-8, the successor, so to speak, of the mythical R2-D2. Droids have always been the order of the day in the saga.

Disney revealed this year that since the purchase of Lucasfilm, they have generated close to $12 billion in total profits, compared to the $4 billion they needed to complete the purchase. There is some economic magic that eliminates some factors from that figure, but it is clear that for the House of Mouse, the license is key.
