Ian McKellen confirms that Gandalf and Frodo will return in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’
The actor has not confirmed whether he will return as the wizard in the new film.

Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit,” has revealed the return of two characters in the new film. ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ directed by Andy Serkis, will feature at least two members of the Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf the Grey and Frodo Baggins.
It was during a meeting of the original cast that Ian McKellen addressed the audience and dropped the bombshell: “I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: There’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s a character in the movie called Gandalf.” He jokingly added: “Apart from that, my lips are sealed!”
McKellen has only mentioned the names of the characters. He has not confirmed that Elijah Wood or himself will be returning, although there have been some knowing smiles. Considering that the film takes place within the time frame of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’, the return of classic characters was quite predictable.
When will ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ be released?
Everything seems to indicate that filming will begin in early 2026. Warner Bros. Discovery is optimistic about meeting the release date, which has been delayed by a whole year. If everything goes according to plan, the film will be released in theaters on December 17, 2027.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is a film centered on the character of Sméagol, who, during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, is captured by Sauron’s minions. After being tortured, he reveals that a Baggins stole the artifact from him.
