He is very well known for being Gandalf in ‘The Lord of the Rings’, and Magneto in several of the Fox/Marvel ‘X-Men’ films. Sir Ian McKellen has been active in show business for six decades, and he never wants to stop. Or at least that’s what he recently declared.

The prolific British actor revealed as such to NPR a few days ago. According to him, he has no plans of retiring from his acting career despite his advanced age. “I’ll carry on until the knees give way or the memory gives way or the mind goes. There’s nothing else I’d rather do with my life than that. Much better to wear out than rust out, as they say,” he said.

Ian McKellen was born on May 25, 1939, so at the time of writing he is 85 years old. And despite its longevity, he’s not slowed down in the slightest, still being an active actor in film, television, and theater. This year he could be seen in the play ‘Player Kings’, as a narrator in two episodes of the ‘Ted’ series, and in 2023 he starred in the film ‘The Critic’.

Apart from this, the interpreter also has expressed his desire to continue being Gandalf in the upcoming ‘Lord of the Rings’ films. This new film, which will be divided into two parts, is titled ‘The Hunt for Gollum’, and will be directed by Andy Serkis, who gave life to the titular character in the original trilogy.

In June 2024 he suffered a bad fall on a theater stage for which he had to be urgently hospitalized. Fortunately, he did not suffer serious damage and recovered swiftly. Based on his most recent statements, the actor takes into account his own age and the ailments derived from it when it comes to staying in the spotlight, although he has decided to remain active as long as he can.
