‘Indiana Jones and the Great Circle‘ is not a direct sequel to ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’
The creative director of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle explains how the game fits with the original trilogy of movies and their timeline.
The film saga concluded in 2023 with ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’, a film in which Harrison Ford plays Indy for the last time, but the adventures of the most famous archaeologist in cinema are not over. MachineGames ( one of Bethesda Game Studios) and Lucasfilm Games have teamed up to create a completely new adventure, which can not only be seen, but also played. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is an upcoming game that continues the adventures of the rugged professor Jones.
After trying it for a few hours, MeriStation had the opportunity to interview Axel Torvenius, creative director of the title. However, the developers never planned for the game to act as a direct sequel to any of the films.
A separate plot from the movies
“It’s not really a sequel, it’s totally independent. There’s nothing in the narrative we’ve written that builds on the previous films. There are things in the game that show or hint at familiar faces, characters, and locations. That is to say, a bit of fanservice, but also with the idea of ensuring it feels like a true Indiana Jones experience, but it’s not a sequel per se, but a product standalone unique and independent. An adventure in itself, basically,” he clarified.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle may not continue any of the cinematic stories, but it is set in a classic era of the character: it takes place in 1937, that is, a year after ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. According to Torvenius, the decision to set it in that era was because the character’s age fit the story they wanted to tell. “For us, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ is the best example when it comes to how Indiana Jones is portrayed, because it is the first time you meet him. It was a very natural choice,” he pointed out.
