Interstellar’s original ending was much darker than what we got in theaters

Christopher Nolan has always made particularly complex films, which are always explained in the form of a Plot Twist at the climax of the movie. When he started his career he did it with Following and he also replicated it in Oppenheimer, his latest work. But with ‘Interstellar’, the director had a doubt about the ending of the science fiction film released in 2014, since what he had originally planned was darker than what the public saw in theaters.

Nerdlist reported that through a meeting held with Christopher Nolan, the filmmaker, in addition to telling everything that happens in the film, specified that the dark ending that he originally had in mind was a much simpler sequence, but that it did not have that direct Plot Twist.

What is ‘Interstellar’ about?

Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, among others. ‘Interstellar’ tells the story of Joseph Cooper, a farmer who worked as a NASA astronaut, who must put on his space traveler suit again to go on a journey of almost no return in order to save humanity from the environmental degradation that afflicts the Earth.

At the same time, Cooper’s daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy) recognizes a rather strange phenomenon in her room, as the place has a gravitational anomaly for a reason that will be explained below.

What happened at the end of ‘Interstellar’?

Before explaining the climax and outcome of the film, be warned that there will be spoilers.

Cooper and scientist Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway) travel through two planets, which are later discovered to be inhospitable. At some point, he understands that he must sacrifice himself to go to another galaxy where there are three planets in which the inhabitants of the earth can live, even if they are near the black hole called Gargantua.

As the film progresses, Cooper realizes that this black hole connects with the Earth, specifically with his home, where his little daughter Murph recognizes this gravitational anomaly that later leads to Morse code, which allows her to receive the mathematical data gathered by his father to save the earth, something she achieves when she is an adult.

Then comes the outcome of the movie, in which the earth is saved, the inhabitants of it move to another place, Cooper is still an adult and his daughter is already an elderly person.

What was the original ending of ‘Interstellar’ like?

At this meeting it was reported that the original idea for the ending was something much darker, in which the black hole would collapse at the moment Cooper communicates with little Murph, so the protagonist of the film would not survive it, without detailing whether the land was saved or not.

If the sequence just explained had been the one selected as the final one, the last sequence of ‘Interstellar’ and everything that was seen in cinemas, possibly would not exist and it could never have been known whether Cooper achieved his goal or not.
