The spectacular final episode of the third season of ‘Invincible’ left fans wanting more. In the final scene, Damien Darkblood talks to Satan, and the two discuss the possibility of transporting Mark to Hell so that the demon can possess his body. This revelation has surprised comic book fans, and rightly so: it is a teaser for a story arc that was discarded for the original story and will come to life in the animated series, as revealed by Robert Kirkman. Thus, we already know that this will be one of the new plots of the expected Season 4 of the Prime Video series when it premieres.

‘Invincible’ Season 3 Finale Post-Credits scene teases discarded comic book arc

The post-credits scene in the final episode of the third season of ‘Invincible’ has left a big unknown for fans of the show and the original comics. In it, Damien Darkblood -voiced by Clancy Brown- talks to Satan - played by Bruce Campbell - about the possibility of taking Mark Grayson to Hell so he can possess his body. This unexpected revelation has taken veteran fans by surprise, as it is a completely new story within the Invincible universe that was never published in the comics.

In a recent interview with Variety, Robert Kirkman, creator of ‘Invincible’, explained that he had always wanted to write a story in which Mark travels to Hell and faces Satan himself, as it is a classic source within the superhero genre. However, throughout the 144 issues of the original series, he never found the right time to develop this arc because there were always other priority plots. Now, thanks to the animated series, Kirkman has decided to revisit the idea and put it into a new context, taking advantage of the fact that Darkblood, the demonic detective, was sent to Hell in the first season-something that did not happen in the comics-which allowed the series to take certain narrative licenses with respect to the original source.

This move is important because it effectively makes ‘Invincible’ more than just a faithful adaptation of the comics. It allows it to expand its story with new ideas and conflicts for Mark. Unlike other adaptations that try to stay within the confines of the source material, here the creator of the work has played a key role in the production and has chosen to incorporate unpublished elements that never saw the light of day in the comics. In this way, the animated series becomes a kind of “recursive adaptation” in which Kirkman not only adapts his own work, but also reinterprets, refines and enriches it with plots that were left in the inkwell, never better said. Kirkman has also confirmed the premiere window for the fourth season: it will arrive sometime in 2026.
