Is Gmail at risk? Google addresses the recent security breach in the service
Google assures users that there is no security breach and their Gmail accounts are safe.
Having secure access to our email accounts is essential for our daily lives. With the many services linked to our accounts, the most important thing is that they are secure. Recently, there have been a series of news stories related to Gmail accounts, mentioning that nearly 2.5 billion users should change their passwords due to a security breach at Google. However, users should not worry.
Through a statement on Google’s official blog, it was announced that recent statements regarding Gmail security are “entirely false.”
“We want to reassure our users that Gmail’s protections are strong and effective,” the blog begins. “Several inaccurate claims surfaced recently that incorrectly stated that we issued a broad warning to all Gmail users about a major Gmail security issue. This is entirely false. While it’s always the case that phishers are looking for ways to infiltrate inboxes, our protections continue to block more than 99.9% of phishing and malware attempts from reaching users.”
How did the rumor about Gmail security start?
But why did the news about the security breach in Gmail start? Despite Google’s claims about its security, the company experienced a security breach last June, in which a group of cybercriminals known as the Shiny Hunters managed to obtain information from Google’s Salesforce database. According to the company, this breach did not compromise any other services or products.
However, this did not stop false information from emerging. That does not mean that taking good care of our accounts and constantly changing our passwords to secure ones does not keep these types of situations at bay.
