Is it necessary to read the prequel novel to understand Star Wars Jedi: Survivor?

Star Wars Jedi: Scars is a novel written by Sam Maggs that takes place immediately after Jedi: Fallen Order and follows the crew of the Mantis.

Star Wars Jedi. Survivor, Star Wars Jedi: Scars

In times of darkness, Cal Kestis continues the journey he began in Jedi: Fallen Order. Before the events of the sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, there is another story that covers the unexplored period between the two video games. We sat down with director Stig Asmussen and asked him if Star Wars: Jedi Scars needs to be read to fully understand the story of the next game.

“I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary, but it does add some context to things that happened before the game and between Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor.” According to Asmussen, the novel will add value for the reader, though those who don’t read it won’t feel lost.

“We tried to fill in as many gaps as possible, even for players who hadn’t played the first game. We wanted to make sure that everyone felt at home when they played the title.”

What is Star Wars: Battle Scars?

The plot of the novel, written by Sam Maggs, begins after Jedi: Fallen Order. The crew of the Mantis has barely survived a deadly confrontation with the Inquisitors and Darth Vader, but danger lurks in the galaxy. As Emperor Palpatine tightens the siege against the surviving Jedi, Cal, Merrin, Greez and Cere attempt to find and attack the weak points of the Galactic Empire. They are not blood relatives, although they have forged a very similar bond. As in the video games, this is one of the themes touched upon in the book.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor takes place five years after Jedi: Fallen Order, almost in the same time period as the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Although we asked him about it, the director preferred not to reveal whether there will be connections between the two products. We will find out on April 28, when it will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.
