Is PlayStation 5 Pro expensive? It costs the same as these wheels for a Mac
The PlayStation 5 Pro is expensive until you compare it to...
The news for the gaming world came this morning. After many rumors, the PlayStation 5 Pro is now a reality that will arrive on November 7th and will cost... 699 dollars? That’s $200 more than when its base console was released in 2020. As expected, the Internet community has made something clear: the price of this console is very high. If you add to this the fact that, despite being a Pro model, it doesn’t come with a disc reader, and even the stand to put it upright is sold separately, it’s clear that the most vocal part of the console’s fans (and its detractors) have found a reason to make a lot of noise.
The price of the PlayStation 5 Pro vs. the history of PlayStation
Something we don’t keep in mind as adults is that the price of things has gone up. It’s no secret that inflation is hitting prices and our wallets harder and harder, but at the same time, the very technology that promised to lower costs is getting more and more expensive.
If we look back in time, we will surely remember the mythical “$299″ with which the PlayStation was announced at E3 1995, something that now seems impossible. About 4 years ago we thought that the $499 at which the PlayStation 5 debuted was already high... but how has it evolved? According to the site inflationstation.net, the prices of PlayStation consoles would be as follows, adjusted for inflation (and, of course, everyone, including a disc reader):
Although the prices are somewhat close to what the PlayStation 5 Pro costs, the cost of this console rises even higher if we want the full experience. If you include the disk reader and its base, the price rises to more than 800 dollars (we have already done the math).
Technology is becoming more and more expensive
Take, for example, another of this week’s big news: the iPhone 16. This Monday, Apple presented what will be the new generation of smartphones, ready to create a revolution with the use of artificial intelligence, or simply to give “status”, depending on the user. These devices are priced between 799 and 1,199 dollars. These are devices that, at best, will be used much more intensively in a user’s daily activities. However, considering that the lifetime is less than that of a console, and depending on the user, this can be a device that can be more or less profitable, making the comparison between time and money spent. It even depends on the device.
PlayStation 5 vs. computer wheels
It is Apple that has inspired us to write this article in which comparing the price of the PlayStation 5 to something expensive and ridiculous can give us a new perspective. The brand from Cupertino, California, is known for having devices that are also more expensive, and among its latest releases, it surprises us with how ridiculous their prices can be. Among the accessories for Macs, you can find a wheel kit for the Mac Pro. Its price? $699. On the other hand, there’s a monitor stand. Its price? $999. Well, it’s sad that we have to make these kinds of comparisons to make the PlayStation 5 Pro’s $30 base not sound so bad.
In any case, it is clear that PlayStation has a complex task ahead of it: to convince its fans that its console is a good investment. The PlayStation 5 Pro offers the initial promise of 4K and 60 FPS gaming, provided you also make another small but expensive investment, such as a compatible TV, a new audio system, the stand... oh, and the disc drive... nothing else.
