Is the iPhone 17 worth it if I already have the previous model? Differences and new features of Apple’s latest model

We take a look at the main improvements of the phone, and this year there seem to be plenty of reasons to make the leap.

iPhone 17

It will always depend on how addicted we are to technology and how we use our cell phones, but the new iPhone 17 brings enough improvements to justify making the leap and purchasing it. For example, it will be the first time in more than six years that Apple has updated the front camera on its cell phones. We will go from the 11 megapixels we have been stuck with since the iPhone 11 (i.e., since 2019) to 24 MP this year. And although the rear camera will still lack what photography lovers have been asking for most (a telephoto lens), the next models will remedy this by including an improved digital zoom.

Aside from the camera, the battery will also be the best ever seen in an iPhone. Not because of the usual increase in mAh (which we will see again), but because of the inclusion of two new features. A C1 modem owned by Apple, which makes 5G connections more efficient and uses less power, and a new battery-saving mode that will use artificial intelligence to control and limit active applications. We expect to have 2.5 hours more battery life in all models compared to the iPhone 16.

Let’s keep going! After the camera and battery, we have the screen and artificial intelligence. The first will be the brand’s largest, reducing bezels and bringing back 120 Hz. Although Apple debuted this technology back in 2021 with the iPhone 13 Pro, the company had completely forgotten about it with its latest releases. This is a key feature for those who play games on their phones and provides extra fluidity for everyone else.

When it comes to AI, Apple promises to have stepped up its game. Although ChatGPT, Meta AI, and especially Gemini have been beating Apple Intelligence (which wasn’t even available on the iPhone 16) hands down, that seems to be about to change. The new A19 chip in the iPhone 17 will have 8 GB of memory and will perform better than ever with all the features and applications that, this time around, will be launched and revamped for the occasion. From now on, comparisons will be based on artificial intelligence.

Last but not least, a change in Apple’s philosophy that deserves to be seen in a new light. The new iPhone 17 will allow third-party peripherals for wireless charging, take a step towards the future by charging SIM cards, and be priced lower than what has been customary for the brand. Suffice it to say that the base model will cost around $900, when previously it was never less than $1,000. They are still an important gateway, but at least the brakes have been applied in that regard.

In short, just as in previous years, Apple has been criticized for the lack of significant new features; this time there are enough improvements and changes to consider switching to the iPhone 17 even if you have the 16 model. We’ve been waiting six years for improvements to the camera, four for enhancements to the screen, and forever for things like peripherals from other brands. It will never be a necessity, and it’s clear that some people will be happy with any phone that has WhatsApp and takes photos at whatever resolution, but tech lovers are celebrating. The iPhone of 2025 represents a major overhaul and will serve as the basis for future models. It will be a while before we see so many significant changes to so many features. After years of half-measures, Apple has finally got its act together.
