It took him six years to realize his Pokémon dream: the complete PokéDex, including all forms and shiny ones
On Pokémon HOME, a player shared his impressive complete PokéDex: every Pokémon available in every possible form, including all Shiny.
“Gotta Catch’em All!” has been the motto of the Pokémon series since its inception, but with the sheer number of creatures available to catch, that motto has been gradually abandoned. However, this has not caused some die-hard fans to throw in the towel. This is the story of one player who claims it took him a total of six years to complete the PokéDex with all the different forms of each creature, plus their shiny versions. What is popularly known as the “Living Dex,” but taken to its maximum expression.
The complete PokéDex of your dreams: This player has caught every Pokémon in every shape and form
On April 16th of last year, X user @TheShepDawg1 proudly showed off his Pokémon video game collection, as well as a video in which he moved between the boxes on his Pokémon HOME account, demonstrating that he not only had all 1025 different Pokémon (the latest being Pecharunt), but also all of their different forms and all of their Shiny versions. A daunting task, and the ultimate goal of every Pokémon Trainer.
The feat of obtaining all the Pokémon available in a particular game is called “Living Dex”. It consists of having at least one copy of every Pokémon available in a box. But what this player has done goes beyond that, as he has also made the effort to catch all of the Shiny Pokémon in all of their different formes. He estimates his total playing time to be around six years, which is quite an achievement.
Shiny Pokémon were introduced in Generation II (Gold, Silver and Crystal) and are basically a different color version of the basic Pokémon. The odds of a Shiny appearing instead of its standard version vary from game to game, but remain extremely low at 1/8192, although recent games such as Scarlet and Violet have items and mechanics that increase this rate.
Formes, on the other hand, come in a variety of forms: they can be Pokémon with different clothing, such as the almost infinite Pikachu with a cap; variations between specimens of the same species; differences between genders; differences between the same Pokémon from different regions; Mega Evolutions; and Gigamax shapes.
The entire collection is safely stored in Pokémon HOME, a mobile and Nintendo Switch application that organizes and stores our Pokémon in the cloud and acts as a link between multiple video games on different systems, such as Pokémon GO mobile, Nintendo 3DS games and Switch games.
It should be noted that in each generation, not all creatures are available in each game; it takes at least two video games of each to capture them all, as this was the way to encourage both additional sales and the social component of the games, as you had to trade Pokémon with friends and acquaintances to get them all. We also have to take into account that some Pokémon were once exclusive to in-person events and are now distributed digitally.
The main merit of this achievement is that this player obtained the creatures through his own means, rather than using external applications such as PKHeX to generate and add creatures to the games, which is basically cheating. In any case, this Pokémon Trainer has done his homework ahead of Pokémon Legends Z-A, the next major release in the series due out in 2025, which is expected to add new creatures.
