It won't be in 'Gladiator 2′, but Russell Crowe will face off against the Roman Empire 25 years later in another movie
‘The Last Druid’ is one of Russell Crowe’s next projects, in which he will once again fight the Romans, but this time as part of the invaded people of ancient Caledonia.
The role of Maximus Decimus Meridius in ‘Gladiator’ (2000) was one of the most iconic in Russell Crowe’s filmography. A quarter of a century later, the actor will return to face the Roman Empire, but not as part of ‘Gladiator 2′ (2024), but as a Celtic druid in ‘The Last Druid’. While it’s not the return fans were hoping for, it promises to be just as intriguing to see Crowe again battle the Romans, this time from the perspective of one of the peoples overrun by the Empire’s seemingly unstoppable advance.
Russell Crowe to star in ‘The Last Druid’, where he will play a druid fighting the Romans
‘The Last Druid’ is the name of one of the upcoming film projects that Russell Crowe will be involved in, according to Deadline. The synopsis of this feature film is summarized as “the story of a Roman Emperor who discovers a secluded Druid stronghold in the mountains of Caledonia. A peaceful Celtic elder (Crowe) must take up arms to protect his family and people from annihilation.” The film will be directed by Will Eubank (“Underwater”), who also co-wrote the script with Phil Gawthorne and Carlyle Eubank.
Although the specific time period in which the movie is set is not revealed, the context suggests that the action takes place just after or during the Roman invasion of the British Isles, which began in 43 AD. “Caledonia” was the Latin name for the northern half of present-day Scotland, coinciding with what we know today as the Scottish Highlands.
The main producer of the project is AGC (‘Those About to Die’) and is currently looking for a distributor. This new movie is in pre-production and casting is underway, so no other actors have been confirmed yet. No release date has been set either.
Although these first details are scarce, the synopsis of the movie, together with the promise that we will see Russell Crowe in action again against the Romans in a new historical fiction story, become great attractions in themselves. Fans of the actor should keep a close eye on this project, which may not be Oscar-bait, but it could produce exciting action sequences that remind us of the best of Crowe’s time on the big screen.
