DC Studios

It's not the most popular, but James Gunn makes a strong case for DC Studios to focus on more obscure characters

A strong statement from the filmmaker about future DC licenses.

James Gunn’s DC Universe is about to premiere with the arrival of “Creature Commandos” on December 5th, and while we all await the arrival of Superman in 2025, other characters such as 'Sergeant Rock' and ‘Swamp Thing’ have come to the fore, and about this, a user interacted with Gunn on the social network Threads. This follower criticized the filmmaker for using the characters mentioned above as protagonists of his own projects, considering them “niche” and without enough potential, something that James Gunn completely disagreed with.

“I’m not telling Batman and Superman’s origin stories again because everyone knows them,” replied Gunn on Threads. “And don’t put Swamp Thing in the corner. That’s a project in development we’ve actually announced, and he’s an incredibly well known character with not only some of the greatest comics of all time but a successful film series and his own TV show, something that could be said of only a very small handful of DC characters.”

DC Studios and Licenses to Dream

James Gunn is not without reason and is that ‘Swamp Thing’ has some of the most respected comics in history, with masters like Alan Moore involved. He is also a recurring figure from the past in terms of horror and sci-fi films, so his return is great news and shows that the filmmaker is very clear about where he wants to go. Who would have thought that Guardians of the Galaxy would be such a huge success? Gunn’s creative mind deserves to try different things and save licenses that deserve much more.

In 2023 it was announced that ‘Swamp Thing’ would be part of the new DC Universe and that James Mangold, known for the last ‘Indiana Jones’ or ‘Logan’ movie, would be the director. The release date is still unknown, but it will be one of DC’s most brilliant projects.
