It’s Official: Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday
Marvel confirms Steve Rogers’ return, raising major questions about the MCU timeline.
After a week of leaks about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one of the secrets that had been kept under wraps has been made official. Chris Evans will return as Captain America for Avengers: Doomsday.
According to viewers who have seen the first screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the first glimpse of Disney’s 2026 blockbuster once again features Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. The teaser, which is about a minute-long, shows the character parking his motorcycle in front of a 1950s-style house. We see Rogers folding his Captain America suit and holding a baby. The teaser ends by confirming his return with “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.”
What does this mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Chris Evans’ return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes as no surprise to some fans. Although the actor already had a cameo after Avengers: Endgame, as his version of Johnny Storm/Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine, for several months some fans had been analyzing recent photos of the actor, noting that his strong physique for playing The Sentinel of Liberty was returning.
However, his return shows that everything Marvel has done in recent years, seeking to introduce new heroes and stories, may not have had the impact that was expected. Bringing back two actors who had already finished their storylines, such as Robert Downey Jr. with Iron Man (now returning as Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom) and Chris Evans, feels, at least without knowing the story or where the Russo brothers are going with it, like something that detracts from what we saw after the end of Avengers: Endgame. For now, questions arise. Did Steve Rogers staying in the past alter something in the multiverse? What does this mean for the timeline? Who is that baby?
We will find out all this in 12 months, once Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
