Team Cherry

It’s official: Hollow Knight Silksong will cost four times less than your favorite game

Team Cherry slaps down an industry where most insist on making everything bigger and more expensive every day.

Update:

In a year when Nintendo has decided to raise the price of its games to $80 and $90, and everyone assumes that GTA 6 will cost $100, Team Cherry has decided to stay true to its principles and has avoided jumping on the bandwagon with the price of Hollow Knight: Silksong. No inflation, no nonsense. The most anticipated game of the year will cost only $19.99 when it goes on sale on September 4.

It’s clear that not all indie games and releases can apply this business model. Hollow Knight, the current king of Metroidvania games, sold incredibly well in its day (more than 15 million units) and its three developers (yes, three) are rolling in money and now devote themselves to this, as they themselves admit in interviews, simply because they enjoy it and have fun doing it. That’s why they’ve taken the announcement of new developments so calmly; they’ve said no to crunch. Besides, they don’t need any marketing maneuvers. More than five million people already have it on their Steam wish list.

In any case, it is striking that Team Cherry has remained true to its principles (remember that Hollow Knight was released in 2017 at a price of $14.99) at a time when there are so many temptations. If they had charged $30 or $40, no one would have said anything. And it’s equally striking that two GOTY contenders like Silksong and Expedition 33 (released at $44.99) are bucking the industry’s upward trend. Not everything has to be bigger, longer, and more expensive.
