Update:

Just one day after announcing a new Star Fox game and on the eve of the console’s first anniversary, Nintendo has announced that the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 will increase worldwide. While Japan is the region most affected (where prices for all models of the original Switch and Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions are also rising), the United States, Canada, and Europe will also see increases in final prices.

The company explains this decision and offers an apology as follows: “In light of changes in market conditions, and after considering the global business outlook, Nintendo will revise the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) of the Nintendo Switch 2 system. We sincerely apologize for the impact these price revisions may have on our customers and other stakeholders, and we deeply appreciate your understanding.”

What does Nintendo mean by “market conditions”?

That phrase is an umbrella term that encompasses several key factors: rising production costs, inflation and exchange rates, international price alignment, and the medium- and long-term outlook.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, the war in Iran, and Donald Trump’s ongoing tariff battles, among other conflicts, are disrupting the company’s logistics, from sourcing certain components (semiconductors, memory chips, batteries) to international distribution.

Nintendo avoids words like “crisis,” “losses,” and “financial problems” because the message is not that the Switch 2 is performing poorly, but rather that maintaining the current price no longer fits with the current economic context, its costs, and its forecasts.
