It’s official: The remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has been canceled

Ubisoft has decided to end the dream of bringing one of the best installments of the franchise to modern times.

Update:

Ubisoft has announced a restructuring of the company, which has affected several projects, some of them in early stages of development and planning, and others in a “more advanced” state, such as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which, since last year, has been reported to be going through difficult times. Nevertheless, in the company’s previous fiscal report, this remake was only said to be experiencing a delay.

Specifically, the announcement includes the cancellation of six (unknown) projects, the delay of seven titles, layoffs within the company, and the permanent closure of internal studios. The Sands of Time, one of the most eagerly awaited returns by gamers, is among the most significant losses in this restructuring.

Another project that has been affected, although not critically, is the remake/remaster of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Little is known about this project, but according to information gathered by various media outlets, it has only been delayed until the next fiscal year (March 2027).

Which studies have been affected by the restructuring?

Ubisoft Stockholm (Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora) will close completely, and it will be joined by Ubisoft Halifax, the company’s mobile division, whose closure was leaked on the internet a few days ago. Another affected company is RedLynx, which worked on Trials and is located in Abu Dhabi, and finally, Massive Entertainment, which dedicated its efforts to keeping The Division franchise afloat.

Similarly, in order to maintain the company’s work structure, it is reported that employees will return to working on-site, and there will no longer be a strong focus on remote work as had been the case previously.

Frederick Duguet, Ubisoft’s Chief Financial Officer, told IGN that these changes come after a thorough analysis conducted between December and January, based on the constant evolution of the market. According to his statement, competition has reached “unprecedented levels,” so he is seeking to adapt to the new needs of the industry.

Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake, a troubled development

Announced in 2020 and with a release window in 2021, this remake, originally developed by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, began to falter and completely disappear from the face of the earth. With no news on its next release, it was revealed in 2022 that these studios would completely leave its development and everything would be handed over to Ubisoft Montreal, building on what these studios had already worked on. Rumors earlier this year indicated that everything in this remake would have a clean slate to start from scratch, joining it with games that were previously announced, as was the case with Beyond Good and Evil 2, which we have not seen since 2018. The project reappeared on June 2024, yet, on 2025, Ubisoft reassured fans the game was still on track.
