Jack Black will play Steve, the protagonist of the Minecraft movie. He joins Jason Momoa, who confirmed his participation in 2022.
Jack Black has confirmed his participation in ‘Minecraft,’ the live-action movie based on the video game of the same name. His role is not trivial, as it has been revealed that he will play Steve, the protagonist - or rather default character - of the game. In this way, he joins Jason Momoa, who has already known since 2022 that he would also participate in this movie.

As reported by Variety, Jack Black has joined the cast of ‘Minecraft’, the live-action adaptation of the video game. Black also announced his participation in the Minecraft movie in a very odd way: through a post on his Instagram account of him reading a book called “Minecraft Basics for Dummies.”
Jason Momoa (‘Aquaman’, ‘Fast X’) has another starring role alongside Emma Myers (‘Wednesday’) and Danielle Brooks (‘The Color Purple’). Principal photography is expected to begin soon in New Zealand. No further details are known about the plot or who wrote the script.
Not many details are known about the production except that is helmed by Jared Hess, who was behind ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ and previously worked with Jack Black on ‘Nacho Libre’, is directing. The movie is being produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary and has a tentative release date of April 4, 2025. This date was the first release delay for this movie.
Jack Black continues to prove that he is Hollywood’s first choice when it comes to starring in movies based on or inspired by video games. He provided the voice of Bowser in ‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’, where he delighted audiences with his “Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches...”; he also appeared in ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ and has a role in the Borderlands movie, where he will play the histrionic Claptrap.
Minecraft, released in its full version in 2011, is the best-selling video game of all time, with more than 300 million units sold. It surpasses other industry titans such as Grand Theft Auto V, with nearly 200 million units sold, and Tetris, with 100 million units sold.
Since its launch, Minecraft has been continually updated with new content. One of the keys to its success is that it is available on virtually every platform: Android, iOS, iPadOS, Xbox 360, Raspberry Pi, Windows Phone, PlayStation 3, Fire OS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Apple TV, tvOS, Nintendo Switch, New Nintendo 3DS, ChromeOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux.
