James Cameron’s wife cried for four hours after watching ‘Avatar 3’ to the point that the director gave up and went to sleep

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ hits theaters this December, starring Sam Worthington and Oscar-winner Zoë Saldaña.

Update:

Avatar: Fire and Ash, popularly referred to as Avatar 3, is one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2025. Very few people have had the chance to see the film so far, aside from director James Cameron himself, who continues to work on the upcoming installments of his epic sci-fi adventure saga.

One of the lucky few is his wife, Suzy Amis—the actress who played elderly Rose’s granddaughter in the present-day scenes of Titanic. According to Cameron, her emotional response after watching the full film left her in tears for four hours. In a recent interview with Empire, the director recalled telling her: “Honey, I’ve got to go to bed,” after realizing she was too overwhelmed to talk about the film.

Back in December, James Cameron held a private screening of Avatar: Fire and Ash for his wife, Suzy Amis, to gauge her reaction to this much-anticipated third chapter in one of the highest-grossing franchises in cinematic history.

“My wife watched the whole thing from end to end — she had kept herself away from it and I wasn’t showing her bits and pieces as we went along. This was December 22nd,” Cameron told Empire.

“She bawled for four hours. She kept trying to get her shit back together so she could tell me specific reactions, and then she’d just tear up and start crying again. Finally, I’m like, ‘Honey, I’ve got to go to bed. Sorry, we’ll talk about it some other time‘,” he added, unable to have a conversation with her immediately after the screening.

According to Cameron, the third Avatar film will be a little longer than the second installment, which means it will likely surpass The Way of Water‘s 3-hour-and-12-minute runtime. He also confirmed we’ll see a lot more of Pandora, as he promised during last year’s D23 Expo.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to premiere in theaters on December 19, aiming to match—or even surpass—the massive box office success of its predecessors. The original Avatar grossed over $2.923 billion worldwide, and Avatar: The Way of Water brought in more than $2.320 billion. Alongside Avengers: Endgame ($2.799 billion), the Avatar films rank among the top three highest-grossing movies of all time. Interestingly, another James Cameron film, Titanic, holds fourth place with $2.264 billion.
