Update:

Sad news comes from Hollywood. James David Van Der Beek has died at the age of 48 after battling cancer. The news was confirmed by his family on the actor’s Instagram profile. He was one of the most beloved performers on the small screen.

Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning," the post writes. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend."

In November 2024, he announced to the world that he had “colorectal cancer.” He made it public to raise awareness about the disease and share his experience. Just over a year later, he has died.

You knew him as Dawson: the career of James David Van Der Beek

His breakthrough in the industry came in the mid-1990s, when he began alternating small roles in film and television with studies at the prestigious Drew University. However, his name rose to the forefront of popular culture in 1998, when he was chosen to star in the teen series Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003). In it, he played Dawson Leery, an idealistic teenager obsessed with cinema, a role that made him an internationally recognizable face and one of the television icons of his generation. The series not only consolidated his career, but also set the tone for a more introspective type of teen drama, far removed from the stereotypes of the time.

After the series ended, Van Der Beek deliberately sought to distance himself from the image of the sensitive guy. He took part in a variety of projects, from comedies to thrillers, appearing in films such as ‘Varsity Blues’ (1999) and ‘Scary Movie’ (2000), where he allowed himself to parody his own fame. At the same time, he developed an intermittent career in theater, returning to Broadway on several occasions and demonstrating versatility in genres ranging from classical drama to musicals.

During the 2010s, he experienced a remarkable professional resurgence thanks to his ability to laugh at himself. His role in the series Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 (2012-2014), playing an exaggerated and narcissistic version of himself, was met with critical acclaim. He subsequently continued to alternate between independent film and television projects, appearing in productions such as CSI: Cyber (2015-2016) and Pose (2018-2021), where he took on more mature and complex roles.
