James Gunn Details His DC Universe Timeline and ‘Superman’ Filming Status

The producer, director, and head of DC Studios reveals how the timeline of his first projects will work.

Although hardly a day goes by that we don’t see pictures or even leaked clips from the filming of ‘Superman’, it’s far from over. What is over is the team’s work in Cleveland, the city where it has been taking place. We are not done shooting,” James Gunn, head of the DC Universe and director of the film, wrote on Threads. “Still a couple weeks left. Just done shooting in Cleveland. And yeah it’s a long shoot... but we’re getting close!”

“We’ve been editing pretty intensely the whole time we’ve been shooting so [post-production] shouldn’t be insanely long,” he adds, suggesting that barring any last-minute hiccups, ‘Superman’ will arrive in time for its July 11, 2025 release date. In the meantime, Gunn will have to juggle his work on the Man of Steel movie with filming the second season of ‘Peacemaker’, which, unlike the first, is set in the DC Universe.

The DC Universe beyond ‘Superman’

And is that work on the series starring John Cena has already begun, in the city of Atlanta, specifically and under the command of Greg Mottola, until Gunn is back. According to him, and to situate us, this second season “follows the events of Superman” and “essentially picks up where season 1 left off with a couple minor differences”.

In this sense, Gunn reveals something important in relation to the chronology of the projects of his DC Universe, and is that it will be very easy to follow the way he has raised it. “All of these initial projects are happening in the order they’re released,” says the producer and director, who is also clear about the next film he will direct. “It’s just a distant corner of my brain as I’m focused on what we’re shooting,” he says.

“Nothing is ‘in production’ unless it’s greenlit,” continues Gunn, who then goes on to detail everything that is currently in the works. “Right now, that’s Superman, Supergirl, Penguin, Peacemaker, Lanterns and a handful of animated projects. But Paradise Lost like many other titles known and unknown is still in very active development - it will be in production once we have a script or scripts we think are great and ready to shoot, never before.”

Unfortunately, DC Studios will not be attending next week’s San Diego Comic-Con in California, confirming that the only studio productions we will see this year will be ‘The Penguin’ and ‘Creature Commandos’. The animated series will be the first production that Gunn considers official to his universe.
