James Gunn explains Batman and Wonder Woman’s place in the DCU as fans wait for their movie debuts

The DC Studios co-CEO says the long-term plan prioritizes iconic heroes while also elevating lesser-known characters.

Update:

The path the new DC Universe has taken in film has been a slow one. And while James Gunn has focused more on characters who may not be as popular as Batman or Wonder Woman, the director considers them “diamond characters” within DC Studios’ current roadmap.

He revealed this in a post on Threads, in response to a now-deleted post about these characters. “I said some stories would be standalone like the Guardians movies were (which is what Clayface is), and some stories would have part of a larger narrative structure, which is what the Superman Saga is. All that said, each piece of the larger story should work on its own with or without having to see everything else,” Gunn wrote.

Balancing Standalone Stories with Interconnected Sagas

The message continued, noting how this roadmap “wasn’t just story points” but an opportunity to develop other characters. “ALSO, some things get conflated here. The often cited “8 to 10 year roadmap” originally pitched wasn’t only story points (although that was a part of it), but also the plan for DC as a whole, including focusing on diamond characters (Superman, Batman, WW) as well as smaller characters we could turn into diamonds (Krypto, John Stewart, Peacemaker), how we would foster filmmaker freedom & allow for multiple tones & ratings, the influences of Star Wars & George RR Martin, and so much more,” he wrote.

Although we’re still a long way from knowing what will happen with these characters, the initial plan also called for both Batman and Wonder Woman to have their own films in which to shine. For now, there are rumors that Wonder Woman will make her debut in the upcoming Superman movie, ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ though this has not been confirmed. Batman, meanwhile, had a very brief cameo at the end of ‘Creature Commandos.’
