James Gunn reveals whether or not Watchmen is part of the new DC Cinematic Universe

As Watchmen retroactively became part of the DC Universe in the comics, will the same happen for James Gunn’s new DCU?

Alan Moore’s ‘Watchmen’ is one of the most iconic and important works in the history of comics, a masterpiece that has been adapted on multiple occasions to the big and small screen, but that never ends up being liked by everyone, especially by its author. DC Studios now has James Gunn at the helm, who has already started the new DC Universe with ‘Creature Commandos’ and in 2025 he will continue it in theaters with ‘Superman’. The question many are asking is, will we have a version of Watchmen under his vision?

James Gunn has spoken about this in Josh Horowitz’s ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, responding to the possibility of working on ‘Watchmen’ with a clear “I respect Alan Moore a lot”. A sign of the commitment and good work that James Gunn intends to have with the work and original authors of all the DC stories, so not forgetting about ‘Watchmen’ is the greatest possible sign of respect for a genius like Alan Moore.

The future of ‘Watchmen’ and its adaptations

Despite his refusal to do anything in the future about ‘Watchmen’, Gunn was quick to praise the Warner Bros. Discovery series, highlighting that “I really loved the television series.” A show of respect towards the works around Moore’s work, but at the same time respecting the author’s desire and separating the work from his future intentions regarding the new DC Universe. It won’t be ‘Watchmen’, but one of the best-known characters Moore has worked on is ‘The Swamp Thing’, created by Len Wein and Berni Wrightson, and of which Gunn is a staunch defender and is preparing an outstanding project.
