James Gunn shares the first image from the script of ‘Man of Tomorrow’ and practically confirms its fearsome villain

Presented as an android or alien, Brainiac is one of the greatest threats the DC heroes have ever faced.

Superman Brainiac

Just a few weeks ago, James Gunn confirmed not only the development, which was taken for granted, but also the title of the next Superman movie: ‘Man of Tomorrow.’ He also revealed that Lex Luthor will show a different side of himself and will be more of an antihero than a villain, as Kal-El and he will have to team up to face an even greater threat. The director, producer, and head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran has shared the first image from the draft script, which makes it pretty clear what that threat is: everything points to it being Brainiac.

Gunn already hinted that we will see Lex dressed in his green and purple battle suit in the same post in which he announced the film’s title. “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult,” the director said recently. “I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”

“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s more complex than that, but it’s a big part of it,” Gunn said.

Who is Brainiac in the DC Universe?

It took 20 years for Superman to meet one of his greatest enemies, as Superman’s debut occurred in Action Comics #1 (1938), while Brainiac’s did not happen until issue #242 (1958). Brainiac is presented as an android or an alien, depending on the universe he finds himself in, whose goal is to travel to gather knowledge. Although at first glance he appears to have noble intentions, the origin of his name suggests otherwise, as it is a combination of “brain” and “maniac.”

Among his greatest abilities are control over technology, superior intelligence, and the astonishing ability to shrink cities. In fact, in certain continuities, he is considered responsible for the destruction of Kandor, the city on Krypton where Kal-El originated.

‘Man of Tomorrow’ will premiere on July 9, 2027.
