Update:

Superman has been a box office success, and now eyes are on the next DC Studios movie, Supergirl. Although it will be a while before we see Milly Alcock’s first adventure as Superman’s cousin, James Gunn himself has already told us that what we will see is “a total mess.”

Warning: minor ‘Superman’ spoilers below.

At the end of Superman, we get a brief glimpse of Supergirl, making a cameo where she stops by to pick up Krypto at the Fortress of Solitude with Superman. She is drunk and calls her cousin a “bitch,” a very different attitude than Kal-El. Given this, in a recent interview with ScreenRant, James Gunn talked a bit about this version of Supergirl and what we can expect from her in his movie.

She’s a mess. She’s a total mess,” Gunn mentions. The movie stipulates that Kryptonians can only get drunk under a red sun, and Supergirl comes to party. However, there’s a reason Kara Zor-El has this attitude.

A traumatic past that defines the new Supergirl

“I mean, I think as we learn, she’s had a completely different background from Superman,” Gunn continued. “A much more difficult background. He’s had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she’s ended up different than her cousin.”

About the film, which is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic book, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Gunn commented, “In our story, we have Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents,” Gunn has explained. “Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet, and she lived there for the first 14 years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more f*cked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.”

Supergirl will hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
