James Gunn’s new DC Universe already has its Green Lantern / John Stewart

The HBO series ‘Lanterns’ continues to expand its cast, adding one of the most important characters within the Green Lantern Corps. James Gunn himself, head of DC Studios, has revealed via his Twitter account that Aaron Pierre will be the actor chosen to bring John Stewart to life in the series after “a long and grueling series of auditions I am absolutely sure we’ve found an incredible John Stewart.”

So far, Pierre is the first actor to be confirmed for the series. Just last Wednesday, Deadline reported that Kyle Chandler is “expected to close negotiations” to join the series, possibly to play Hal Jordan. Recently, it was revealed that Josh Brolin was the first option to play Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in the series.

What will Lanterns be about?

The series, which focuses on the Green Lanterns, was greenlit (no pun intended) last June. The series will have a total of eight episodes. According to HBO’s official synopsis, ‘Lanterns’ will follow “new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earthbound mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Watchmen, The Leftovers, and Lost creator Damon Lindelof and comic book legend Tom King will executive produce.

The series will begin filming next January 2025 in Atlanta and is scheduled to wrap up around June. The series does not yet have a premiere date on HBO.
