James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ won’t show the character’s origins: “We start right in the middle of the action”
The director admits that there will be humor, although it will not be as nonsensical as in ‘Suicide Squad’ or ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.
The big moment is approaching when we can finally enjoy the first trailer for ‘Superman’, the first movie in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The producer and director, despite his transparency, has left details in dribs and drabs. Still, as the most anticipated trailer of the moment approaches, he has seen fit to reveal new information, anticipating that, unlike in Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’, we will not discover the origins of the hero. Still, everything will start already “in the middle of the action”.
“Superman already exists. Lois and Clark already know each other,” Gunn begins. “Lex hates Superman’s guts from the beginning, although they don’t know each other personally. So we start right in the middle of the action. It takes place over a short amount of time..”
“The relationship between the characters of David (Corenswet, Clark Kent) and Rachel (Brosnahan, Lois Lane) on screen is something we’ve never seen before,” the director continues. “I hate to say this, but I don’t think it’s something we’ve ever seen in a superhero movie.”
“It’s a complicated relationship and we really get into it, there are long scenes about how they relate and what it would be like for an incredibly intelligent, strong-willed person and a skeptical journalist to relate to someone who can lift a skyscraper.” And it’s Gunn who makes it clear that Lois “knows who Superman is.”
Gunn also elaborates on the tone of the movie, as some fans are concerned that ‘Superman’ will have an over-the-top sense of humor that doesn’t really fit with some superheroes. “There’s some humor, but it’s not as comedic as ‘Suicide Squad’ or ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’” Gunn says. “People like Rachel are so funny and David is very funny as well, so there’s humor in it, but it’s trying to create something that is grounded, but also it’s an incredibly fanciful world, it’s fantasy.”
When will Superman premiere?
Superman' will premiere on July 11, coinciding with another superhero production, but this time from Marvel Studios: ‘Fantastic 4: First Steps’. That will be followed by ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, which will be based on the story in vignettes by one of the great DC Comics screenwriters of today, Tom King. But the DC Universe has already officially begun with the premiere of ‘Creature Commandos’, currently on MAX.
