Update:

Imagine you don’t have much time to shower, or you want to conserve water as much as possible. Look no further: in Japan, a human washing machine has been invented that allows you to get in and out clean as a whistle after a few minutes of “washing.” This peculiar invention has recently gone viral on social media due to its striking design. And, despite what its name suggests, no, there is no “drum” or “spin cycle” that could endanger the safety of the humans inside.

The human washing machine exists, and it’s Japanese: this is the Future Human Washing Machine presented in Osaka in 2025

Dubbed the “Future Human Washing Machine,” this peculiar machine was unveiled last June at the Osaka Expo 2025. This device is designed for a human being to climb inside and receive a complete wash in just fifteen minutes, potentially saving time and water with each use.

The first step in the process is to enter the device, which is designed as a single-person cabin. After this, water and soap are injected into the cabin. Next, the interior screen is activated, providing a full sensory experience with relaxing music and videos. Next, rinsing and cleansing are performed using tiny water bubbles, capable of removing impurities and dirt from the bare skin. Finally, the machine dries the user, and when the cycle is complete, the compartment opens and they can exit.

Its creators are the Japanese company Science, a firm dedicated to manufacturing shower heads that has decided to diversify its business and broaden its horizons in a rather unusual way. And, given the great curiosity this product aroused at the fair, it could be a huge success in the making.

A luxury not suitable for every budget

For now, we know that each human washing machine costs 60 million yen (about $385,000 at current exchange rates), that only a very limited number of these devices will be produced (about 50), and that they are primarily intended for luxury hotels and spas.

Many of those attending the event agreed that it “solves a problem they didn’t know they had”: measuring the time they spend in the shower down to the millimeter, allowing them to better organize their busy schedules. Although we don’t know if it will replace traditional showers or bathtubs, one thing is clear: there are few things more Japanese than a machine that can wash you, relax you, and return you to the real world in 15 minutes. And, given the furor it has caused, it wouldn’t be surprising if it became the next viral gadget from Japan.
