Jason Momoa’s Minecraft movie reveals new details, release date

Warner Bros. Pictures has just revealed more details about some of their upcoming movies, including the release date for Jason Momoa’s Minecraft live-action movie

Update:
Jason Momoa Aquaman Minecraft

Recently, Warnes Bros. Pictures announced some changes on its release calendar for their upcoming productions. While some films got moved around, fans of Jason Momoa received it a small treat since two of the movies where he stars got release dates: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and the unbelievably real Minecraft live-action movie adaptation.

According to what was revealed, DC’s Aquaman sequel is now releasing worldwide five days earlier than previously revealed, on December 20, 2023, in order to make way for another movie of the same studio, The Color Purple, to launch on Christmas day.

On the other hand, the company also released some new details about the upcoming Minecraft live-action adaptation on the big screen. We already knew that Mojang’s beloved video game was to get transported to movie theaters with Jason Momoa as the lead actor (whether or not he will be Steve is still to be seen). We now have a date for when the movie comes out: April 4, 2025.

On the production side of things, it was revealed that Jared Hess, of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre fame, has been chosen as the director of Minecraft. If we go by his previous works, perhaps we could expect to get the same kind of smart, deadpan humor he’s known for, but while we think it would actually be a good fit for the adaptation moviemakers like Hess have proven that they possess an amazing range of talent when given free rein.

The Minecraft movie has been in pre-production for almost a decade, ever since director Shawn Levy announced he would be working on it. After his departure from the role, the project was passed along through many hands, eventually landing where it is now. With so many video game adaptations being praised as of late, like The Last of Us on HBO and the current release of The Super Mario Bros Movie, will Minecraft build up to a grand release, or will it disappear with a hiss followed by a huge mess like a creeper?
