Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will return in the new Hunger Games movie: How is this possible?
The highly anticipated prequel to the saga, ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’, will include a scene that allows for the return of Katniss and Peeta.

The Hunger Games saga will return in 2026 with a new installment titled ‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,’ and although it is a prequel, Deadline has just confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will appear in it. Although Suzanne Collins’ novel is set 24 years before the events of the first book, there is a canonical justification that makes this epic return possible.
It turns out that in the book on which this film is based, Collins included a scene in which Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the characters played by Lawrence and Hutcherson, reappear as adults listening to Haymutch Abernathy as he recounts what happened in his own Hunger Games. This justifies the presence of both actors in the prequel, something that will undoubtedly delight the vast majority of fans.
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will share the screen again in 2026
Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping begins right at the start of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the “Second Quarter Quell.” Haymutch Abernathy was the winner of that edition when he was just 16 years old and was only a resourceful teenager from District 12. At that time, the character now played by Joseph Zada had to survive in an arena with rules that were much crueler than usual.

On the other hand, the news of Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson’s return comes just as both are enjoying a high point in their careers. The actor has just released ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’, while the actress has just received her seventh Golden Globe nomination for ‘Die My Love.’ The premiere of ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ will take place on November 20, 2026, where the two will once again share the screen, playing the characters that made them famous. What a twist of fate.
