Hollywood is crying again. 2024 is not over yet and it continues to leave us with bad news around the movie world. The latest news has to do with Jim Abrahams. The director died of natural causes at the age of 80 in his home in Santa Monica, California, as confirmed by his son Joseph. The filmmaker was known for his absurd but sharp humor. Airplane!' is a classic among the comedy classics of the 1980s.

‘Airplane!‘, the big hit that defined Abrahams

In fact, the movie starring Leslie Nielsen and Robert Hays was his big screen debut. His excellent debut allowed him to take a springboard that led him to opportunities in television, directing one of the episodes of the mythical ‘Police Squad’ in 1982 (just two years later). His next feature film also made a big impact with its unabashedly bawdy humor. Top Secret!" (1984) parodied World War II spy movies with the sauce that only Abrahams knew how to add. He surrounded himself with heavyweights like Val Kilmer and Jeremy Kemp.

As a director he began to drop the level of quality he had previously shown. Ruthless People' (1986), ‘Big Business’ (1988) and ‘Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael‘ (1990) left a lot to be desired until his last movie as a director: ‘Mafia’ from 1998. During his best years, he also combined his work as a screenwriter, giving life to movies like ‘The Kentucky Fried Movie’ (1977) and ’Scary Movie 4′ (2006). May he rest in peace.
