Jim Carrey comes out of retirement to play the evil Dr. Robotnik in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’

For the third time in a row, the popular actor will play the villain of Sega’s long-running franchise.

In the last five years, we have only seen the charismatic Jim Carrey in two movies. One is ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ and the other is its sequel, which will be released in 2022. Since then, it was not even entirely clear that the actor would return to the big screen, but now we have no doubt, as Variety has exclusively confirmed that ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3′ will see him back in the role of the evil Dr. Robotnik.

Paramount Pictures has already made it clear that they would not consider a third installment without Carrey in the role of Dr. Robotnik, and even expressed their good feelings at the thought of his return. Now, after the confirmation, the official account of the franchise has released a short teaser in which it also revealed the release date of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3′, which is set for December 2024.

Jim Carrey’s return to this movie is something special. In April 2022, he announced his retirement from acting, with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to be his last film until then. At the time, the actor said: “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

Shadow is in vogue

He is a beloved character among fans, and in addition to the role he will have in the upcoming movie, Sega also wants to bet big on him in video games. So much so that the new version of Sonic Generations has changed the name of the original title to Sonic X Shadow Generations. It was one of the surprises of Sony’s State of Play that took place on January 31st.
