Kaitlyn Dever, actress from ‘The Last of Us’, talks about season 3: “fans are really going to like it”
The actress is already preparing to start filming a season in which she will take center stage.
There are still months to go before the premiere of the third season of ‘The Last of Us,’ as it is expected to premiere on HBO sometime in 2027. However, Kaitlyn Dever, the actress who plays the controversial Abby, is already preparing for what will be, for better or worse, a surprising season, and for several reasons. One is that Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the saga, has definitively stepped away from the series to focus on his work at Naughty Dog. The other is that Ellie, and obviously Joel, will cede the spotlight to Abby. Despite all this, Dever is optimistic and believes that fans will end up satisfied.
“I’m getting mentally and physically prepped right now. I go up in a couple days, actually, to start prep over there. I’m so excited to kind of take on a much bigger role in the season,“ Dever said in an interview. ”The fans are really going to like it, I think, the shifting perspective onto Abby, getting some more context onto her storyline and going back in time with this season. So, I’m very excited for the fans to see it.”
Ironically, it is the fidelity to the structure of the video games that raises suspicions among fans of the series who have not played it. As with The Last of Us: Part II, what we will see next after the first violent encounter between Allie and Abby is the latter’s background, meaning that this third season will take place, at least in part, in a different timeline from the second.
Why did Druckmann leave ‘The Last of Us’?
Druckmann’s absence from the third season of the series, in which he will not write or direct, nor take on any role whatsoever, can be explained by one fact. The Last of Us: Part 2 is the last original game released by Naughty Dog, and that was almost six years ago. Since then, there have been a couple of revisions of the saga (The Last of Us Remake and The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered), but no truly new games. Therefore, Druckmann has decided to return to the studio to speed up the process of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the company’s next game.

However, everything points to this not being enough for the game to be released in 2026, and it is estimated that it will most likely arrive in 2027, if not later. Despite this, PlayStation is not concerned, as this year will see the release of some very important exclusive games such as Marvel’s Wolverine, Saros, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.
