Kate Winslet on her most iconic nude scene in cinema: “I wish I hadn’t shown so much flesh”

The famous Oscar-winning actress and star of films such as ‘Titanic’ and ‘The Reader’ regrets certain decisions she made in her career.

Kate Winslet is one of the most renowned actresses of recent decades, especially after winning numerous awards for some of her most celebrated roles, including an Oscar for Best Actress for 2008’s The Reader, as well as several BAFTAs and Golden Globes for films such as ‘Sense and Sensibility,’ ‘Revolutionary Road,’ and ‘Steve Jobs,’ and Emmys for series such as ‘Mildred Pierce,’ ‘Mare of Easttown,’ and ‘I Am Ruth.’ But the British actress has also been part of blockbusters of the caliber of ‘Titanic,’ ‘Divergent,’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’ Although she has also played roles she is not so proud of, or at least certain parts of them: “I was young and I knew I had things to prove,” the actress said.

Thus, in 1997, James Cameron’s Titanic was released, starring Kate Winslet alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. In the film, Winslet plays Rose DeWitt Bukater, a 17-year-old upper-class girl from Philadelphia who is having an affair with third-class passenger Jack Dawson, played by DiCaprio. At one point in their passionate relationship, Rose is sketched by Jack, with the actress completely naked before his eyes and the camera. How does Winslet remember that scene? Apparently, somewhat negatively.

In an interview with The Sun in 2010, Winslet admitted that she had some regrets about how the scene was handled: “I’m not going to look. I’ll be in the bar by that point. I wish I hadn’t shown so much flesh but I was young and I knew I had things to prove,” said the actress. In 2014, she revisited the topic, noting that the scene will haunt her forever and continues to torment her to this day: “Fans ask me to sign that photograph,” something she refuses to do because it makes her uncomfortable: “Why do people do this? People ask me to sign that [picture] a lot.”

“I didn’t want it to become a photograph that I would continue to see [seventeen years] later,” even decades after it was filmed. “It’s still haunting me. It’s quite funny really” she continues ironically. James Cameron himself has spoken on several occasions about how he believes Winslet was “a bit traumatized” after working on Titanic as a result of the “scale of the production” and “Winslet’s responsibility within it.”

And having nude photos of her to sign, as well as receiving horrible comments about “shaming her for her weight” and why Jack didn’t fit through the door in that other iconic scene from the film, it’s no wonder Winslet doesn’t remember the film and its most delicate scene with the greatest enthusiasm.

Despite everything, the actress spoke enthusiastically about how much the culture of the industry has changed following movements such as #MeToo: “Young actresses now … they are unafraid. It makes me so proud. And I think, Yes, all the shit flinging, all the struggle, all the using my voice for years, often being finger-pointed at and laughed at – I don’t give a sh*t! It was all bloody worth it,” she said. “Because the culture is changing in the way that I couldn’t in my wildest dreams have imagined in my 20s,” Winslet concluded.

Titanic can be watched in the United States on Paramount Plus.
