Kenneth Branagh explains how his original Thor plans were darker, driving the character “into a glorious twilight”
The filmmaker reflects on unused ideas for Thor’s future and why Marvel’s long-term plans are now beyond his control.

It’s been 15 years since Kenneth Branagh brought the world of the Norse gods to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Chris Hemsworth became the mighty Thor. And although Branagh never returned to direct the God of Thunder’s adventures for Marvel Studios, he has something in mind that could bring him back to the director’s chair for a film that bids farewell to the character.
In an interview with Business Insider, Branagh mentioned that they’ve had ideas about how he would have liked to wrap up his vision for Thor in the MCU if he had stayed on. Back in the day, the director was only involved in the first film, giving the Marvel characters a more Shakespearean take, but he declined to return for the second installment, and eventually, the direction of the films fell into the hands of Taika Waititi. But had he stayed on, things would have gotten more violent.
“I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant Logan,” Branagh said. “I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight.”

The Future of Thor on the Big Screen
It’s a fact that Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and the actor has mentioned that there will be another ‘Thor’ movie following ‘Secret Wars’, but for now, everything has remained quiet. Regarding his return, Branagh commented, “That’s a whole other question,” Branagh said. “They are so far into the future of the Marvel Universe that I’m sure whatever plans they have for it are already kind of set.”

However, his “Logan-style” storyline could very well come to pass, considering that after 'Thor: Love and Thunder,' the God of Thunder was left traveling through the cosmos with a young companion—a dynamic very similar to the ending Hugh Jackman’s character received back in the day.
