Koshmar: The Last Reverie blends roguelite systems and psychological horror in a gothic dream world

Purple Ray Studio reveals its second project, starring a lucid dreamer navigating reality and nightmares.

Update:

Purple Ray Studio, a Poland-based development team made up of industry veterans, has announced its second project, Koshmar: The Last Reverie. The game is a third-person action-adventure that combines roguelite structure with role-playing systems, set within a gothic-inspired world shaped by dreams and psychological symbolism.

Players take on the role of Violet, a teenager from a deteriorating town who has the ability to lucid dream. When an unexplained sleeping sickness begins affecting the local population, Violet enters the subconscious worlds of others to investigate its source. The narrative centers on the overlap between reality and the dream realm, with progression tied closely to the choices made during these explorations.

A system built around player choice

A central mechanic in Koshmar: The Last Reverie is its dual-alignment system, which influences both gameplay and narrative direction. Players can approach combat using either Dream- or Nightmare-aligned weapons, each generating different resources that move Violet toward states described as “Delusion” or “Madness.” These alignments affect available abilities, weapon options, and character appearance, while also altering how the game world responds to Violet’s actions.

This system is designed to encourage experimentation across multiple playthroughs. Player decisions not only shape moment-to-moment combat encounters but also influence story outcomes, leading to different narrative conclusions depending on how Violet’s psychological state evolves over time. The game incorporates repeatable combat-focused areas known as Nightmare Rifts. These sections introduce roguelite elements intended to test adaptability and mastery of the combat system. Outside of combat, players will encounter platforming sequences and environmental puzzles, all presented within stylized environments that draw from gothic and steampunk influences.

Koshmar: The Last Reverie is currently in active development for PC and consoles. While a release window has not yet been announced, the game is already listed on Steam, where interested players can follow its progress ahead of further updates from the studio.
